Saudi Arabia Confirms Rapid Spread of JN.1 Covid Variant

Saudi Arabia announced detection of JN.1, a sub-variant of Covid-19 that is seeing a surge across countries during winter season. On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health reported monitoring the rapid spread of the JN.1 variant within the local populace. Notably, 36% of the cases reported were attributed to this variant. However, the Ministry also confirmed that this increase in cases did not lead to any corresponding rise in ICU admissions.

In a recent post, the authorities have debunked the circulating rumors and warnings regarding a new epidemic. They clarified that the JN.1 variant is a derivative of Covid-19 and poses no additional risks. It further confirmed that the effectiveness of immunization with the developed Covid-19 vaccine is still valid and there is no reason for concern and there is no need to apply strict measures.

The health authority further advised individuals to rely on credible official sources for obtaining accurate information. The JN.1 variant has been identified as the most rapidly expanding respiratory virus strain over the past two years. On Tuesday, the World Health Organization designated it as a variant of interest due to its potential to exacerbate the respiratory virus burden in the Northern Hemisphere. Fortunately, the latest booster formulation is expected to offer substantial protection against this strain, according to the organization.
