Doha Metro & Lusail Tram Records Over 3.1 Million Passengers During AFC Asian Cup Group Stage


Doha, Qatar: Qatar Rail recently announced that over 3.1 million passengers utilized the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram during the group stage of the Asian Cup Qatar 2023 from January 12 to 25.

Of the total, 3 million passengers utilized the metro, while 113 thousand passengers used the tram. The metro and tram services proved to be instrumental in providing a secure and dependable travel experience for the Asian Cup fans.

These services enabled easy access to various areas and key destinations around the city and witnessed significant turnout during the first fourteen days of the tournament, which featured 36 matches.

The total number of trips to and from the stadiums during this phase reached 535,000.

29% of fans utilized the metro for transportation to the nine tournament stadiums, while 35% used the metro to access stadiums located within walking distance of the metro network.

On January 12, the opening day of the tournament, the metro witnessed the highest ridership for an individual match, with 52% of fans choosing metro transport to attend the opening ceremony.

On January 25th, the network achieved its peak daily ridership during the group stage, with a remarkable total of 267,900 trips utilizing the metro and its thirty-seven stations.

Msheireb, DECC, and Souq Waqif were Doha Metro's busiest stations during the group stage of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023.

Chief of Strategy and Business Development at Qatar Rail, Ajlan Eid Al Enazi said, "The group stage of the tournament highlighted a substantial number of fans opting for the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram for their daily commutes. We have developed operational plans to facilitate seamless movement of fans to reach the stadiums effortlessly. For instance, we have reduced the headway between trains to two minutes on the Gold Line, enabling fans to attend games held on the same day simultaneously using a single line."
