Jordanian football player, Mahmoud Al-Mardi expressed his support for the Palestinian people by lifting his shirt to display the slogan "The cause of the honorable" after scoring Jordan's first goal in a 4-0 victory over Malaysia during the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar on 15 January 2024.
Al-Mardi's message is very relevant as Gaza continues to suffer under Israel’s attack that has been ongoing for over 100 days.
Within moments of his celebration, photos were shared on social media and rapidly gained widespread attention. Many viewers lauded his actions as a remarkable example of how sports can serve as a powerful platform for promoting social activism and positive change.
In the 12th minute of the match, Al-Mardi initiated the scoring. In the 18th minute, Musa Al-Taaman extended the lead from the penalty spot, and Al-Mardi doubled his tally just after the half-hour mark. Al-Taaman netted the fourth and final goal for Jordan in the late stages of the second half.
Israel has killed over 24,100 Palestinians and 60,348 people got injured since October 7, 2023. And what is more horrible is that the genocidal war continues in the country.
