As per a Saudi newspaper, authorities have permitted conducting marriage contracts in Islam's two most revered sites, Mecca and Medina.
This decision is part of a broader effort to enhance the experience of pilgrims and visitors.
According to Al Watan, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah recently announced a new initiative that enables organized and hassle-free marriage contracts to take place at the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina.
According to Musaed Al Jabri, a Saudi mazoun, or marriage official, it is permissible in Islam to conduct a marriage contract at the mosque. Al Jabri cited the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) as an example, who is known to have performed a companion's marriage ceremony at a mosque.
Performing the marriage agreement at the Prophet's Mosque is a prevalent practice among Medina's locals, he added.
This is due to several reasons," "Some of them have the tradition of inviting most relatives of the would-be married couple. Often, the house of the wife-to-be's family can't accommodate all the invitees. So, the nuptial contract is conducted at the Prophet's Mosque or the Qaba Mosque (the first mosque built in Islam)," Al Jabri said.
