Doha, Qatar: Qatar Rail has announced the number of passengers who used the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks during the initial round of the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup from January 12 to January 16, 2024. The total number of passengers amounted to 1,079,340, with 1,040,973 passengers utilizing the Metro and 38,367 passengers traveling via the tram.
The opening day of the tournament witnessed a significant surge in demand, especially during the Qatar vs. Lebanon match at Lusail Stadium. This resulted in a high turnout of commuters, with 234,862 passengers utilizing the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks.
The metro system in Doha provides effortless access to many popular event venues and attractions like Souq Waqif, Lusail Boulevard, and Katara. Particularly noteworthy is that the Expo 2023 Doha Exhibition can be accessed directly via the Al Bidda and Corniche stations on the Red Line, with Al Bidda Park serving as the primary venue for the event.
Among Doha Metro's busiest stations, Lusail QNB, DECC, and Msheireb were notable, with Legtaifiya being the most frequently visited stop along Lusail Tram.
Chief of Strategy and Business Development at Qatar Rail, Ajlan Eid Al Enazi said,
"During the first round of the Asian Cup, we observed a high demand on Doha Metro services to reach the tournament stadiums.
This was especially notable given the opportunity for match ticket holders to receive a complimentary Day Pass. We would like to emphasize the importance of collecting the Day Pass at any station before the match day to save time. Additionally, the pass can be used throughout the day to travel to various destinations in the city of Doha, not just for attending the matches."
"We are pleased with this successful start and are delighted to once again experience the enthusiasm and football passion with the Asian fans at the Doha Metro stations" he added.
