More Than 2000 People Buried in a Papua New Guinea Landslide

More than 2,000 individuals are feared to be trapped beneath the debris of a landslide in Papua New Guinea, resulting in the devastation of a secluded highland village, as reported by the government on Monday. 

Urging for international assistance in the ongoing rescue operations, the catastrophic event occurred when a portion of Mount Mungalo gave way in the early hours of Friday, engulfing numerous residences and their occupants as they slept.

In a communication addressed to the United Nations and obtained by AFP, Papua New Guinea's national disaster center disclosed that the landslide not only entombed over 2,000 individuals but also inflicted extensive damage to structures, agricultural plots, and the nation's economic vitality. Department (QMD) has issued a marine advisory starting from May 27 for the entirety of this week, citing the forecast of intense winds and elevated sea levels.
