Sudan's Health Minister, Haitham Ibrahim, has officially declared a cholera epidemic in the country following WHO’s report of 316 cholera-related deaths in the country.

The announcement, made in collaboration with the World Health Organization and local authorities, highlights the impact of contaminated drinking water and adverse weather conditions on the spread of the disease.

The epidemic comes at a time when Sudan is already facing a protracted conflict between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces, further complicated by recent heavy rainfall and flooding. Particularly affected is the Kassala state, where thousands have been displaced, leading to a surge in illnesses like diarrhea, especially among children.

Authorities are urgently seeking international assistance to address the crisis, as the cholera outbreak poses a grave threat to public health in Sudan amidst the existing challenges of conflict and natural disasters.
