So far this year, Africa has seen an alarming 18,737 suspected or confirmed cases of mpox. The African Union health agency has just disclosed a staggering 1,200 cases reported in just one week.
These cases involve three different virus strains, including the more hazardous Clade 1b, which has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare an international health emergency.
Out of these cases, 3,101 have been confirmed, and 15,636 are still suspected across 12 African Union member states.
The reported cases have led to 541 deaths, resulting in a fatality rate of 2.89 percent, according to a recent release from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
