UAE Pardons 57 Bangladesh Nationals Jailed for Protesting

The state media reported on Tuesday that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pardoned to 57 Bangladeshi citizens who were imprisoned for protesting in the gulf country against their former Bangladesh government.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE President, has ordered the release of these individuals who took part in protests and disturbances across different emirates. The official Emirati news agency WAM announced that this decision includes cancelling the convicted individuals' sentences and arranging for their deportation.

In the UAE, unauthorized protests are not allowed, and any criticism of authorities or speech that may provoke social unrest is not accepted. The Bangladeshi citizens were convicted for participating in demonstrations supporting student-led protests in Bangladesh that resulted in the ousting of the longstanding leader Sheikh Hasina.
